After an exorcism, some cry scandal. Jesus does not defend himself in anger: he shows that the Kingdom has already arrived, by the finger of God. But he warns that a clean and empty house is not enough. It must be inhabited by him.

Lord, there is an evil in the world that divides.
You are stronger than every dark power.
If your finger drives out the darkness,
your Kingdom is already here.

Free us from the voices that accuse and confuse,
from the suspicion that cannot recognize good.
Give us clear eyes to see
where your hand is at work.

Do not let our homes be divided.
Families, communities, hearts at war.
Unite what pride breaks.
We want to stand with you, not against you.

Holy Spirit, enter and dwell in me.
A house in order but empty is fragile.
Fill it with prayer and charity,
so that evil does not come knocking again.

Gather us, Jesus, as your flock.
May every gesture of ours gather and not scatter.
With you we are safe.

Amen.

Explanation

In the Gospel of Luke (11:15-26), Jesus drives out a demon and some accuse him of acting by Beelzebul, the prince of demons. Others ask him for a sign from heaven. Jesus replies that a kingdom divided against itself falls, and that if he drives out demons by the finger of God, the Kingdom has come upon them. Whoever is not with him is against him, and whoever does not gather with him scatters. He then speaks of the unclean spirit that returns to a swept and tidy house with seven worse spirits. The heart must be inhabited by God.

  4. Fill the house: Set a fixed time for the Word and prayer, so the heart is not left empty.
