His mother and his brothers stay outside: the crowd is too great. Jesus does not send them away, but widens the house. Whoever hears the Word and lives it enters his family. Mary, first of all, shows us how.
The house is full, Lord, and the crowd presses around you.
I too seek a place near you.
Do not leave me on the threshold.
Let me enter your family.
Father, you speak every day.
Make my ear attentive and docile.
A word heard is a seed in good soil.
Let it not stay shut in a drawer.
Mary, mother and first disciple,
you listened and kept the Word.
You said your yes and lived it.
Teach us your silent faithfulness.
Holy Spirit, bond of communion,
widen the borders of our families.
Let no one feel excluded or a stranger.
Make us brothers and sisters to those who are alone.
Turn our listening into deeds, Lord.
Let our hands, steps and words speak the Gospel.
Then we shall truly be yours.
Amen.
Explanation
In the Gospel of Luke (8:19-21), the mother and brothers of Jesus seek him, but cannot reach him because of the crowd. He is told that they are outside and wish to see him. Jesus answers: «My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it». He does not diminish family ties, but reveals a deeper kinship, that of faith. Mary is the perfect model: she heard the Word, kept it and lived it. Every baptized person is called to enter this family.
Practical Applications for Daily Life
- Listen every day: Read a passage of the Gospel and carry a single phrase with you.
- Put it into practice: Turn the Word into one concrete act before evening.
- Look to Mary: Pray a Hail Mary, asking for her docile listening.
- Widen the table: Make room for someone alone or struggling in your circle.
- Rediscover the community: Attend Mass attentively, like someone entering a family.
