Jesus does not dismiss small duties, but he restores their order: justice and the love of God come first. Front seats, public greetings and loads laid on others turn faith into a showcase. We ask for a heart that serves rather than performs.

Lord, we measure the mint in our gardens
and forget the neighbor at the gate.
Put first things first in me again:
justice, and the love of God.

Teach me to tend the small duties
without neglecting the great ones.
Give me a conscience that weighs
with mercy, not with suspicion.

Cure me of hunting for the best seat.
Let no greeting in the market square
swell my pride or buy my loyalty.
I will sit low, near you.

Spare me from stacking loads on weary shoulders.
Let me be the one who stoops to lift.
Give me the open hand of Christ,
not a finger that points.

Holy Spirit, make our faith true all the way through.
Lead us into the truth that frees.
Praise to you, today and always.

Amen.

Explanation

In Luke’s Gospel (11:42-46), Jesus utters woes against the Pharisees: they tithe mint and rue, yet neglect justice and the love of God. Both must be practiced. They love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplace, and they are like unmarked graves. A lawyer protests that this insults them too. Jesus replies that they burden people with loads too heavy to bear and will not lift a finger to help. The Lord calls for a faith of love, not of display or heavy rules.

Practical Applications for Daily Life

  1. Reorder your priorities: List three things God cares about most and check how your day reflects them.
  2. Do justice: Repay a favor or a right you have overlooked.
  3. Take the lowest seat: At a meeting or a meal, gladly yield the best place.
  4. Lighten a load: Help someone who is carrying too much.
  5. Greet sincerely: Offer a warm hello to someone usually overlooked.
