A friend knocks at midnight for three loaves. Jesus makes it an image of persistent prayer. If a sleepy friend gives in, how much more will the Father listen! But the greatest gift awaiting us is not bread: it is the Holy Spirit.

It is night, Father, and I knock again.
Not from whim, but from need.
You neither sleep nor tire.
Hear my muted cry.

Teach me to ask with trust,
to seek with attentive eyes,
to knock without growing weary.
Whoever pleads with you does not leave empty-handed.

You do not give stones instead of bread,
nor snakes instead of fish.
Frail as we are, we know how to give good to our children:
how much more you, Father in heaven!

The gift I await is your Spirit.
Let him come and console what in me is dry.
Let him light my choices, warm my fears,
make my heart new.

Grant patience to those who wait for an answer.
Sustain those who pray in silence for years.
You are faithful and you always listen.

Amen.

Explanation

In the Gospel of Luke (11:5-13), Jesus tells of a man who goes to his friend at midnight to ask for three loaves for a guest who has arrived from a journey. The friend, from inside, refuses, but because of his persistence he will rise. Jesus concludes: «Ask and it will be given to you; search and you will find; knock and the door will be opened». Then he asks which father would give a snake to a child who asks for a fish. If we know how to give good things, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Persevering prayer is trust.

  4. Knock for another: Pray today for someone who no longer knows how to pray.
  5. Be bread for someone: Answer a request for help, even if it comes at a bad time.
