Jesus is a dinner guest, and a Pharisee is shocked by an unwashed hand. The Lord looks past the rim of the cup to the heart that holds it. The one who made the outside also made the inside. Let us invite him into both.
Jesus, you take a seat at our table and look within.
We show you polished plates and crowded hearts.
Do not be fooled by our good manners,
and help us not to fool ourselves.
Maker of all we are, outside and in,
nothing of us is a stranger to you.
Open the rooms we keep locked.
Let light fall where dust has settled.
Free us from greed dressed up as politeness,
from unkindness spoken with a smile.
Give us the plain heart of the pure.
Whoever gives, is healed.
You say: give from what is within.
Not coins alone, but time and attention.
Open our hands toward those in need,
and everything will be clean.
Spirit of living water,
wash what our rituals never reach.
Praise to you, today and always.
Amen.
Explanation
In Luke’s Gospel (11:37-41), a Pharisee invites Jesus to dine and is astonished that he skips the ritual washing. The Lord says the Pharisees scrub the outside of cup and dish while inside they are full of greed and wickedness. He calls them fools: did not the maker of the outside make the inside too? He urges them to give alms from within, and then everything will be clean for them. Jesus does not scorn ritual; he exposes appearances that hide a closed heart. Purity springs from charity.

- Give something of yours: Make a concrete offering today to someone in need, however small.
- Stop performing: Skip one word or gesture meant only to look good.
- Clear the air: Honestly settle a misunderstanding you have left hanging.
- Bless the meal: Before eating, thank God for the food and those who prepared it.
