Thousands press around Jesus, so close they trample one another, yet he speaks to his friends about hypocrisy and fear. Nothing stays hidden, and nothing is forgotten by God. A Father who numbers our hairs frees us from dread. Let us learn the sparrow’s calm.

No mask survives your gaze, Lord.
What we whisper in the dark you already hear.
Let me be transparent as dawn,
so my yes is never a costume.
Take from me the yeast of pretending.
Let plain, honest bread rise instead,
a loaf small enough to share,
good enough to feed a neighbor.
Five sparrows for two coins,
and not one slips from your memory.
If you keep them, how much more us.
Teach us the trust of the small.
You number every hair and know every road I have walked.
No worry is too little for your ear.
Chase off the dread that makes me suspicious,
and settle me in the peace of your children.
Spirit of courage, send us out unafraid.
Glory to you, today and for ever.
Amen.
In Luke’s Gospel (12:1-7), as thousands gather, Jesus speaks first to his disciples: beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing hidden will stay hidden. He tells them not to fear those who kill the body, but to revere God alone. Five sparrows sell for two coins, yet not one is forgotten before God. Even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Trust in the Father overcomes both hypocrisy and fear.
