To own Jesus before others can be costly, yet he promises to own us before the angels. When we must answer for our faith, we are never alone: the Spirit supplies the words. Let us ask for a courage that speaks simply and gladly.

Lord, there are rooms where I lower my voice
the moment your name might come up.
Forgive that small betrayal.
Let me speak of you as of a friend.
You promise to stand up for us in heaven,
before every angel, by name.
No one on earth can offer so much.
Why do I still bargain for approval?
Spirit of God, keep me soft toward you.
Let no stubbornness bar your light.
Dwell in me, a welcome guest,
and make my heart a place of listening.
If I am summoned to explain my hope,
do not let me hide behind rehearsed speeches.
Whisper in that hour what is needed.
One gentle sentence may be enough.
Strengthen Christians persecuted for their faith.
Give them your voice and your consolation.
Glory to you, holy Trinity, for ever.
Amen.
In Luke’s Gospel (12:8-12), Jesus says that whoever acknowledges him before others will be acknowledged by the Son of Man before the angels of God, and whoever denies him will be denied. Speaking against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but blaspheming against the Holy Spirit cannot. He then reassures the disciples: when brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, they need not worry how to defend themselves, for the Holy Spirit will teach them in that very hour what to say. Witness is the Spirit’s gift.
