A landowner plants a vineyard and entrusts it to tenants, but they reject every messenger he sends, even his son. Jesus tells this hard parable to reveal the heart of God: patient, wounded, yet always faithful. Today he asks us what fruit we are bearing in the vineyard entrusted to us.

Lord, you planted a precious vineyard within me.
You tended it with hedge, winepress and tower.
How little I match such great care.
Make me good soil for your love.
Father, you send messengers and we often turn them away.
Your words unsettle us, call us to change.
Open our hearts to those who call us back to the good.
Do not let us close the door to your voice.
Jesus, you sent your Son and we rejected him.
Yet the rejected stone became the cornerstone.
Let us recognize your face in those we discard.
Build your new house upon us.
Christ, you ask for fruit, not only words.
Look at my vineyard: what truly grows there?
Uproot the weeds of selfishness and indifference.
Make me fruitful in your Kingdom.
Holy Spirit, make us faithful tenants, not owners.
May we always recognize to whom we belong.
Make the vineyard of our life bear fruit.
To you be praise, forever.
Amen.
In the Gospel of Matthew (21:33-43), Jesus tells the parable of a man who plants a vineyard and entrusts it to tenants before leaving on a journey. At harvest time, the tenants reject and kill the servants sent to collect the fruit, and finally kill the landowner’s son too, hoping to gain the inheritance. Jesus asks the chief priests what the owner will do to those tenants, and they answer that he will put them to death and give the vineyard to others who will produce its fruit. The Lord quotes the Psalm: the stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone. The Kingdom of God will be given to those who bear fruit.
