The Rock of Faith and the Key to the Kingdom
Jesus pushes us beyond common opinion and asks our hearts for a personal commitment. He is not satisfied with the answers of others. He desires to meet us in the intimacy of divine grace to reveal who He truly is and grant us the firm foundation of His Church.
Lord Jesus, Word of the living God,
You challenge us in the intimacy of our hearts and ask us who You are to us.
Grant us the light of the Holy Spirit,
to go beyond human opinions and profess the true faith.
Heavenly Father, source of all revelation,
we thank You for giving Peter the gaze of grace.
Strengthen in us the certainty that life springs from Your loving presence
and that in You alone we find the ultimate truth of our existence.
Lord, You founded Your Church on the firm rock of Peter.
Make Your bride always faithful and steadfast in times of trial.
May the powers of evil never prevail against the community of believers,
united around the Pope in charity and truth.
Christ the Savior, who entrusted the keys of the Kingdom to the hands of the Church,
grant our pastors the wisdom to loose every chain of sin
and to bind the hearts of all men to the embrace of Your boundless mercy.
Sustain our uncertain steps on the path of life,
so that our profession of faith may become concrete daily witness.
Place Your word in our thoughts and in our actions,
uniting us forever to You, the Son of the living God.
Amen.
In the Gospel of Matthew (16:13-20), Jesus leads His disciples to Caesarea Philippi to guide them toward a decision of faith. After asking about general human opinions, He poses a personal question: “But who do you say that I am?”. Simon Peter answers through divine revelation, recognizing Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus changes Simon’s name to “Peter” and promises to build His Church upon this rock, against which the gates of hell shall not prevail. The bestowal of the keys and the authority to bind and loose establish Peter’s primacy and the Church’s ministry of reconciliation.
