Forgiving Seventy-Seven Times to Live the Father's Joy
On this Sunday, the Lord leads us into the heart of the parable of the unforgiving servant. The forgiveness God offers us knows no bounds and requires that it be passed on to our brothers and sisters. Let us open our arms to welcome the grace of reconciliation and break every chain of resentment.
Source of mercy, heal the wounds of our past resentments.
Do not allow pride and revenge to poison our relationships.
May Your Church be a place of welcome, peace, and deep reconciliation.
Teach us to look at others with the same eyes of compassion as the Father.
Holy Spirit, untie every knot of bitterness and grant true freedom.
Amen.
In Matthew 18:21-35, Jesus answers Peter’s question about forgiveness by declaring the need to forgive “seventy-seven times” and telling the parable of the unforgiving servant. The Church’s Magisterium teaches that divine forgiveness is the source and measure of fraternal forgiveness. God has forgiven us an immeasurable debt through Christ’s sacrifice. Facing this immense gift, a Christian cannot withhold mercy from fellow debtors. Forgiveness granted from the heart is not a vague feeling, but a decision of grace that frees us from the poison of resentment and makes us like our heavenly Father.
