A crowd demands proof, and Jesus answers with his own life. Nineveh heard one reluctant prophet and changed; a foreign queen crossed the desert for a king’s wisdom. Someone greater than both is here. What would it take for us to truly listen?

Lord, we keep asking for a sign
when you have already given us yourself.
Forgive our appetite for the spectacular.
Teach us to find you in plain things.
Nineveh heard one reluctant prophet and repented.
We have heard you so many times, Father.
Soften whatever has grown hard in us,
and let your word finally take root.
Like the queen who crossed the desert,
let us hunger for what is true.
No distance is too great for wisdom,
and here is more than Solomon.
Jesus, your sign is the cross and the empty tomb.
You went down into the dark and rose in light.
Let that be proof enough for us
when our hearts ask for more.
Spirit of God, make today the day we turn.
Not tomorrow, not when it is easier.
Glory to you, now and for ever.
Amen.
In Luke’s Gospel (11:29-32), Jesus tells the thronging crowds that this generation looks for a sign, yet will receive only the sign of Jonah. As Jonah was a sign to Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. He recalls the Queen of the South, who traveled far to hear Solomon, and the Ninevites, who repented at Jonah’s preaching. Both will rise in judgment against those who refuse to listen. Jesus is greater than Solomon and Jonah. The true sign is his person, revealed in death and resurrection.
