A woman in the crowd praises the mother of Jesus. The Lord welcomes the joy, but points to a greater beatitude: to hear the Word and keep it. Mary is blessed because she believed, and she is the first to live it. This path is open to each of us.

Joy, Lord, for those who love you aloud!
A woman praises you and the crowd falls silent.
Help me voice my praise,
without shame and without reserve.
Blessed the mother who bore you.
Blessed every mother who gives life.
For all of them we thank you, Father.
Keep them in your tenderness.
But you point to a deeper happiness.
Admiring is not enough: we must listen.
Blessed is whoever welcomes your Word
and lets it become life.
Mary, your beatitude is faith.
You believed in the fulfillment of what was told you.
Stay close to us when we struggle to believe.
Teach us the joy of obedience.
Make us blessed, Jesus, not for what we have,
but for what we hear and do.
Make our life a praise that lasts.
Amen.
In the Gospel of Luke (11:27-28), while Jesus is speaking, a woman in the crowd raises her voice and says: «Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you!». It is a spontaneous cry of admiration. Jesus replies: «Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!». He does not deny the praise of Mary, but reveals its deeper reason: her greatness lies in having listened to the Word and treasured it. True happiness is born of faith lived and is offered to every disciple.
