Prayer of the day for Sunday, June 28, 2026, entitled: “The logic of gift”

Dear brothers, today’s Gospel presents us with a radical and beautiful choice of love. Jesus invites us not to hold anything back for ourselves, reminding us that true joy is found when we learn to lose our life for Him, welcoming our neighbor as if we were welcoming God Himself.

O Father, source of all genuine love, free our hearts from the chains of selfishness and help us to place You above every earthly affection.

Lord Jesus, give us the courage to embrace our daily cross without fear, so that we may walk with confidence behind your steps of light.

Holy Spirit, transform our existence into cradles of hospitality. Teach us to discern the face of the Savior in anyone who knocks on our door.

Make our hands ready for charity, capable of bringing relief to the little ones through simple, humble gestures filled with sincere attention.

May our life be a clear reflection of your gratuitousness, to safeguard the treasure of faith and walk together toward your eternal peace.

Amen.

EXPLANATION

In this page of Matthew, Jesus sketches the identity of the disciple. The Master does not exclude family love, but demands its proper order: God must occupy the first place. Following Him entails the courage of the cross and the paradox of losing one’s life to find it renewed. The passage closes with the value of hospitality. Whoever welcomes the witnesses of the Gospel welcomes Christ. Even the most humble gesture, such as offering a glass of water to a little one, holds immense value in the eyes of the Father and will not go without its eternal reward.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

  1. Start the day by offering your actions to God before checking your phone.
  2. Accept a tiring, unexpected event without complaining, offering it up as a small cross.
  3. Make a phone call or visit a lonely person who is waiting for a word of comfort.
  4. Perform an act of gratuitous kindness toward a difficult colleague or family member.
  5. Donate a concrete contribution to a charitable work for those most in need.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

  1. Is there a bond or a security that I am putting before my following of Christ?
  2. How can I transform my daily cross into an act of love rather than a burden?
  3. Am I capable of welcoming others without prejudice, seeing the face of Jesus in them?
  4. What are the “small gestures” of fresh water that I can offer to those around me today?
  5. What does “losing one’s life” for the sake of the Gospel concretely mean to me?
