A Single Heartbeat, Love for God and Neighbor
Meeting the Lord means letting oneself be wrapped in a love that unifies rather than divides. Jesus responds to the scholar of the law by revealing the living heart of the Gospel. Love for the Father is reflected in our embrace of our neighbor: not two separate paths, but a single journey of light.
Lord Jesus,
You are the firm rock upon which our every hope rests.
Soften our hardness and give us a heart docile to the Holy Spirit.
Teach us to love You without reserve and without human calculation.
Free our thoughts from the technicalities of a formal faith.
Grant that our minds may always seek Your truth.
Open our eyes to the suffering flesh of our brothers and sisters.
Do not allow indifference to cool our charity.
Teach our hands to serve with discretion and joy.
Father of mercy,
unite what our fragility tends to divide.
Make us credible witnesses of Your law of love.
Guard our lives in the unity of fraternal embrace.
Be the light that guides our every daily step.
Amen.
In the Gospel passage of Matthew (22:34-40), Jesus confronts the provocation of the Pharisees by revealing the core of all divine Revelation. Asked about the greatest commandment, the Master inextricably links total love for God with love for one’s neighbor as oneself. The Magisterium of the Church teaches us that authentic piety towards God cannot ignore fraternal charity. These two commandments are two sides of the same coin: vertical love for the Creator finds its concrete verification in daily service and welcome toward others.
