The Eyes That See the Divine in Daily Life
Too often our familiarity with things or people risks extinguishing our sense of wonder. In Nazareth, routine blinded the hearts of Jesus’ fellow townsmen, preventing them from perceiving the Creator beneath the garments of the carpenter’s son. Let us ask for the grace of a pure gaze, capable of overcoming prejudice and welcoming God in the simplest moments of our daily life.
Lord Jesus, teacher of humility and truth,
deliver our hearts from the blindness of prejudice.
Grant that we may never stop at mere appearances.
Give us eyes capable of perceiving your presence
in the simplest gestures and in the people around us.
Preserve within us the freshness of wonder.
Holy Spirit, breath of wisdom,
teach us not to cage the action of God
within our narrow human schemes.
Flood our lives with the gift of a firm faith,
capable of overcoming the barriers of suspicion and offense.
God the Father, source of all grace,
let not our unbelief stand in the way of your wonders,
but make us a welcoming home for your Word.
Amen.

In the Gospel according to Matthew (13:54-58), Jesus returns to Nazareth, but the excessive familiarity of his fellow townsmen becomes an obstacle to faith. Knowing his family and his background as a craftsman, they take offense at his wisdom. Unbelief blocks grace and prevents the working of miracles. The Church’s Magisterium reminds us that God loves to reveal Himself in the ordinary and in the concreteness of the Incarnation: true faith requires the humility to move beyond our preconceptions to recognize Him present and active in our brothers and sisters and in daily life.
