The Generous Gaze of the Vineyard Owner
The owner of the vineyard calls workers at all hours of the day and grants each the same reward of salvation. Jesus overturns our human calculations to reveal the absolute gratuity and bountiful goodness of the Father.
Lord Jesus, good owner of the vineyard,
You who call each of us to labor in Your Kingdom.
Thank You for never tiring of seeking us out at every hour.
Free us from envy and selfish calculation.
Heal our eyes from the poison of resentful comparison.
Make us able to rejoice in the grace granted to others.
Source of supreme justice and infinite goodness,
teach us the logic of the gratuity of Your love.
May we work in Your vineyard purely out of the joy of serving You.
Holy Spirit, fire of fraternity and peace,
open our hearts to those called last.
Make us builders of welcoming communities without barriers.
Merciful Father, who gives beyond all human merit,
preserve us always in Your loving mercy.
May our praise celebrate Your immense goodness.
Amen.
The parable of the workers in the vineyard (Mt 20:1-16) subverts human ideas of retributive justice. The owner goes out at dawn, third, sixth, ninth, and eleventh hours to send workers into his vineyard, giving all the same reward (salvation). Facing complaints from those called first, the owner asserts his freedom to be generous. The Magisterium emphasizes that salvation is a gift of pure grace: God looks not to our merit ledger, but to His boundless mercy desiring all to be saved.
