Great Love Earns Great Forgiveness
In the house of the Pharisee, a sinful woman bathes Jesus’ feet with her tears. The Lord sees deep faith behind repentance and grants forgiveness. Let us ask for the grace to love much so as to experience the joy of Reconciliation.
Lord Jesus, physician of the soul and heart,
You who know the depths of our weakness.
Welcome today the sincere tears of our repentance.
Free us from the coldness of religious formalism.
Break the pride of those who deem themselves righteous before You.
Grant us a humble heart capable of loving You passionately.
Fragrant oil of divine grace,
pour Your balm upon our inner wounds.
May we experience the sweetness of Your forgiveness.
Holy Spirit, fire of renewing charity,
teach us not to judge fallen brothers and sisters.
Make us welcoming and merciful toward all who suffer.
Merciful Father, who restores those who trust in You,
grant us to walk in the peace of Your salvation.
May our lives express our gratitude for Your love.
Amen.
The Gospel of Luke (7:36-50) contrasts Simon the Pharisee with the sinful woman. Simon judges with rigidity; the woman loves, anoints Jesus’ feet, and weeps with genuine repentance. Jesus declares that her many sins are forgiven because she showed great love. The Magisterium underlines the centrality of the Sacrament of Reconciliation: God’s forgiveness is not earned by our merit, but flows from His infinite mercy to which we respond with humble love.
