Martha welcomes Jesus and bustles to serve him. Mary sits and listens. The Lord does not scold the service, but the agitation that steals peace. One thing alone is needed: to be with him and let him fill us.

You enter my day like a guest, Lord.
I open the door, but my heart runs elsewhere.
I have a thousand things to prepare.
You wait for me, and you have time for me.
When I fret, call me by name.
With the voice that knows my hurry.
Give me the grace to sit for a moment.
At your feet, time becomes full.
Do you not care, I say, that I serve alone?
Yet you see every effort of mine.
Make my service a joyful gift,
not a bill to present.
Mary, sister of listening,
teach me the better part.
A Word welcomed will not be taken from me,
it will remain when all else passes.
Holy Spirit, unite Martha and Mary in us.
Busy hands and a listening heart.
Let every work be born of your voice.
Amen.
In the Gospel of Luke (10:38-42), Jesus enters a village and Martha welcomes him. Her sister Mary, seated at the Lord’s feet, listens to his word, while Martha is distracted by her many tasks. Martha complains that Mary has left her alone to serve. Jesus answers with affection: «Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing». Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken from her. The Lord does not devalue service, but reminds us that it is born of listening. Without it, it risks becoming agitation.
