Under the Fig Tree, the Gaze That Saw Us First
Nathanael is amazed to be known by a stranger. Jesus had already seen him under a fig tree, in his truest thought, before they ever met. On the feast of the archangels, we discover that heaven is closer than we think, and that we are watched over by gazes that keep vigil for us.

Lord, you saw me before I sought you.
You know the secret place of my thoughts.
I need not hide myself from you.
Let me be surprised by your gaze.
Like Nathanael, I doubt and then believe.
My certainties melt away before you.
Open me to the greater mystery of faith.
Let me see beyond first impressions.
Father, you have placed faithful messengers beside us.
Michael, Gabriel and Raphael guard your design.
Send us their quiet strength as well.
May they defend us on each day’s path.
Christ, you promise open heavens to those who believe.
Angels ascending and descending upon you.
Keep us bound to heaven through prayer.
Do not let the earth close us in on itself.
Holy Spirit, make us Israelites without falsehood.
Hearts clear, without deceit or masks.
May our yes be whole, like Nathanael’s.
To you be glory, today and always.
Amen.
In the Gospel of John (1:47-51), Jesus sees Nathanael approaching and says of him: here is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit. Nathanael is amazed to be known, and Jesus answers that he had already seen him under the fig tree, before Philip called him. Nathanael then recognizes him as the Son of God and King of Israel. Jesus promises he will see greater things: the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man. On the feast of the archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, the Church celebrates the messengers God places beside us.
