Hand on the Plow, the Following That Never Looks Back
On the road to Jerusalem, three men promise to follow Jesus, yet each one carries a condition. The Lord does not seek passing enthusiasm: he asks for a yes without regrets. Whoever puts a hand to the plow cannot turn back, for the Kingdom asks for the whole heart today.

Lord, I too say to you: I will follow you anywhere.
Yet how many conditions I hide in this promise.
You have nowhere to lay your head.
Teach me a following without calculation.
You call me, and I answer with a «but first».
I postpone, I delay, I cling to what I know.
Loosen my heart from the ties that hold it back.
Let your today become my today.
Jesus, you ask us to leave even the dead to the dead.
Not out of harshness, but out of love’s urgency.
The Kingdom does not wait for our convenient times.
Give me the courage to set out now.
Father, the hand on the plow does not turn back.
Every furrow traced is a step of trust.
Keep my eyes fixed steadily on you.
Let the past not hold back my future.
Holy Spirit, set me free for the Gospel.
No den, no nest, but you as my home.
Make my life a journey without regrets.
To you be praise, today and always.
Amen.
In the Gospel of Luke (9:57-62), three men approach Jesus along the road. To the first, who promises to follow him anywhere, Jesus recalls that he has nowhere to lay his head. To the second, whom he calls, who asks to bury his father first, he answers to let the dead bury their own dead and go to proclaim the Kingdom. To the third, who wants first to say farewell to his family, he says that no one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the Kingdom of God. Following Christ demands a free decision, without conditions or delays.
