When the Word Is Greater Than We Are
Everyone marvels at the wonders of Jesus, but he speaks of being handed over and of suffering. The disciples do not understand and are afraid to ask. We too sometimes fall silent before the mystery. Yet it is right there that the Lord takes us by the hand.

The people applaud your wonders, Lord.
You already look beyond, toward the cross.
Open our eyes to what saves.
Not only amazement, but faith.
Father, you know our fears.
When we do not understand, you do not leave us alone.
Give us the courage to ask.
No sincere question offends you.
Jesus, your path passes through self-giving.
You entrusted yourself into human hands.
Teach us to trust in the dark.
Even when we do not see the why.
Holy Spirit, you reveal what is hidden.
Remind us of the words of the Lord.
Bring them to light in due time.
Grant us patience in understanding.
Watch over those who suffer without understanding.
Stay close to the sick, the lonely, the disappointed.
May your Word be their hope.
Amen.
In the Gospel of Luke (9:43b-45), while everyone is amazed at all that Jesus does, he tells the disciples to let his words sink into their ears: the Son of Man is about to be handed over to men. But they do not understand. The meaning remains hidden from them, and they are afraid to ask him. The passage shows the difficult path of faith: the mystery of the cross is not understood at once. Only after Easter will the disciples understand it, enlightened by the Holy Spirit.
